Everything You Need to Know About the New Aeroplan Program

The new and improved Aeroplan program and credit cards are finally here. Air Canada introduced various co-branded cards with TD, CIBC and American Express under their revised Aeroplan program. Each of the 13 credit cards is accompanied with a welcome bonus offer and the chance to earn points while you spend.

Air Canada originally announced that an updated Aeroplan program and affiliated credit cards were coming in the summer of 2020. At the time, the airline declared that they were transforming their loyalty program and changes would be effective on November 8, 2020.

“Despite the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on the airline industry, Air Canada will continue to innovate and anticipate the needs of our customers. Our transformed loyalty program is industry-leading on many levels, including offering a peerless user experience, value and convenience. I fully expect that this important initiative will give us a major competitive advantage in attracting and retaining customers as the industry recovers from the pandemic,” voiced Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

Existing members were automatically transferred to the new program. Instead of being called Miles, the rewards are now called points. Members don’t need to worry about losing points because the rewards were transferred on a one-to-one basis. Aeroplan credit card holders still have the opportunity to earn double the points by claiming them on their credit card and using their regular Aeroplan card.

Below is a summary of other changes to the Aeroplan program:

  • More options. Aeroplan Family Sharing allows members to pool their rewards with family which means that points and rewards can be earned faster. Points are now earned on every Air Canada flight booked, including Economy Basic Fares. Users have the option to use points for other travel perks such as in-flight Wi-Fi and travel upgrades. Finally, the available merchandise rewards have been expanded.
  • Better value on flight rewards. Utilize flight rewards to travel to hundreds of worldwide destinations. Aeroplan offers flights with Air Canada and 35 partner airlines. There are no longer limitations on flight seats and no cash surcharges. In addition, pricing is more predictable and there’s an option to pay with Points + Cash.
  • Air Canada Altitude is turning into Aeroplan Elite Status. The Aeroplan program will continue to offer five Elite Status levels: Aeroplan 25K, 35K, 50K, 75K and Super Elite. The Elite Status benefits remain relatively the same with some additions including Priority Rewards and Status Pass.

“Canadians deserve more from their Loyalty programs, plain and simple. The transformed Aeroplan is more rewarding, easier to use, and flexible,” stated Mark Nasr, Vice President, Loyalty and eCommerce at Air Canada. “Thank you to the over 36,000 consumers and employees whose feedback, ideas, and guidance drove every feature. Importantly, this relaunch isn’t our final destination; stay-tuned for dozens of additional features, rewarding benefits, and new partners joining the program in the coming months.”
